Degree Recognition

The MD degree from the Philippines is valid in India when the programme meets NMC's FMGL 2021 rules.

  • Pre-Medical: A CHED-accredited Bachelor of Science course (usually 1–2 years, depending on the college).
  • MD Programme: At least 54 months (4.5 years) of medical study, as NMC requires.
  • Internship: 12 months of clinical internship at the same institution or its affiliated hospital.
  • Total: About 6.5–7.5 years in all, depending on the pre-medical course.
After clearing NExT/FMGE, a 12-month supervised internship in India is also required for permanent registration.

  • The entire MD programme, including lectures, textbooks, exams and hospital rounds, is conducted in English.
  • No local language (Filipino/Tagalog) is required for academics. English is also the working language in most hospitals.
  • Pre-Medical (BS): Foundational sciences such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Anatomy and Physiology, building toward the NMAT.
  • MD Years 1–2: Basic medical sciences: Biochemistry, Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Pathology.
  • MD Years 3–4: Clinical clerkship and hospital rotations: Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, OB-GYN and allied specialties.
  • Pre-medical years follow a standard lecture-hall format, like any science degree.
  • MD years shift to smaller clinical clerkship groups once hospital rotations begin.
  • Continuous assessments run each term. Students must clear the NMAT to enter the MD and pass exams to move between years.
  • Clinical clerkship rotations place students across Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics and OB-GYN departments.
  • Indian students returning home take NExT/FMGE in India.

About Medical Education in Philippines

US-pattern medical education in an English-speaking country

The Philippines has built its medical education system on the American model. Students first complete a pre-medical Bachelor of Science course and then enter the Doctor of Medicine programme after clearing the NMAT. Medical schools are regulated by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and many are attached to their own teaching hospitals, giving students strong hands-on clinical exposure during the clerkship years.

India and the Philippines share long-standing diplomatic and educational ties. Many Indian students study medicine there, especially in Cebu, Davao and Manila, so campuses have Indian mess facilities, student groups and a familiar support network. A fully English-speaking environment, a tropical disease pattern similar to India's and affordable fees make the Philippines a practical choice for aspiring doctors.
